Ensuring legal compliance - reporting carbon emissions
Mallett, founded in 1865, is one of the oldest established antique dealers in the world, specialising in the finest pieces of furniture and works of art. The company approached Brite Green to help them comply the UK Governments mandatory greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting regulations, which require all UK quoted companies to report their global GHG emissions in the Directors’ Report.
As Mallett had not been required to report on any specific environmental issue before, Brite Green worked with the Finance Director to develop a clear compliance plan. The plan determined the scope of the emissions sources which were to be reported, the data sources for each and a programme to collect data and information.
Data was collected from the company’s sites in the UK and US and the carbon emissions calculated in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (revised edition) and Defra environmental reporting guidelines. Brite Green drafted the required disclosure for the annual report, with supporting intensity metrics and narrative.
A detailed evidence pack was also produced for the financial auditors to ensure the audit process was straightforward. This documented the data sources, the emissions factors and the calculation methodology to limit the administrative burden on the finance team.
